Quote of the Day: Fannie Farmer

"I certainly feel that the time is not far distant when a knowledge of the principles of diet will be an essential part of one's education. Then mankind will eat to live, be able to do better mental and physical work and disease will be less frequent."

Printable golf rules provide a handy reference on the course

from:

Printable golf rules come in handy if you are new to the game of golf and you need to take a short set of rules with you out to the course as a reminder. When it comes to traditional golf, there are a few complicated rules, such as when it comes to stroke penalties and hazards, so having a set of printable golf rules may be helpful. Also, if any controversy arises while on the course between players, having a set of printable golf rules available may help clarify whatever golf rule is under discussion.

Printable golf rules may be hard to find, and you don't want to have to type up your own rules or write them out by hand. If you are new to the game of golf, and you don't want to forget an important rule while you are out on the course, here is a short version of some essential printable golf rules that you can use. Some of these printable golf rules include golf etiquette tips, which are important when it comes to the gentleman's game.

• Never touch the golf ball while it is in play. The only times it is acceptable to pick up or touch your ball is when you are on the putting green and the ball has been marked, or when you are taking a stroke penalty and removing the ball from a hazard or unplayable lie.
• Only hit first on the putting green or in the fairway if you are the player the furthest away from the hole.
• If you are waiting to hit your ball, get prepared for your upcoming shot by selecting your club or taking practice swings. You should always be conscious of avoiding slow play on the course.
• The player who hits first off each tee box is the player who scored the least number of strokes on the preceding hole.
• You are allowed a maximum of fourteen golf clubs in your golf bag while on the course.
• Never talk, make noises, or make sudden movements while another player is hitting a shot.
• While on the putting green, be careful not to step in the line of another player's putt.
• Check to see if the golf course you are playing at has a dress code. It is a good idea to wear a collared shirt to the golf course.

This list makes a quick reference guide of printable golf rules for a beginner out on the course. Following these simple printable golf rules will ensure that you have a fun time on the golf course.

Kevin Merfeld: OB, lost ball penalties too severe (The Monterey County Herald)

There are bizarre rules in sports, like the dropped third strike in baseball. So OK, the ball is deemed in play on a batter's third strike, and if the pitch is caught by the catcher, it is considered the same as an infielder snagging a line drive. That makes the batter out.

USGA feeling good about '09, Fay says, despite taking some lumps with the economy (Sports Illustrated)

Some good news: the USGA is not laying off anybody. The organization, which has 300 employees, most of whom work at the headquarters in Far Hills, N.J., has not had to make any cuts even though the economy is slinking along with the needle almost on empty. David B. Fay, the USGA's longtime executive director, is grateful for that. There are benefits, he said in a telephone interview on Tuesday, ...
